Anstiebury Camp, a large Iron Age hill fort in Coldharbour, is a Scheduled Ancient Monument that demonstrates early occupation. The fort, constructed in the second and first centuries BC, covers approximately 5 hectares and features a triple rampart wall, a double terrace, and a single line of defences. The entrance is midway along the eastern side, with a wide break in the main rampart. Investigations in 1972-3 revealed that the front of the main rampart was set against a ditch and revetted with sandstone blocks, likely to resist sling warfare. The entrance and defences to the north were never completed, possibly linked to the deliberate demolition of the main rampart revetment or Caesar's invasions of Britain. The site was re-occupied in the Roman period, possibly a century after its original abandonment.
