The inn of the Prior of St. Swithun was briefly under the Bishops of Rochester but was later destroyed by Stow and divided into thirty-seven tenements. The house of the Abbot of St. Augustine's was later divided into small tenements by Sir Anthony St. Leger of Ulcombe in Kent and his son Warham. Southwark in 1598 was more famous for its fair inns for receiving travelers, particularly situated on the road from London Bridge. The inn of the Prior of St. Pancras became a common hostel for travelers, while the 'Tabard' maintained its old reputation as a house of entertainment. Mediaeval features of the inns were destroyed by fires in Borough High Street in 1676 and 1689. However, several inns erected in the 17th century remained standing until recent years. The historic 'Tabard' was rebuilt after 1676 and replaced by the modern public-house of the same name in 1875. Another Jacobean inn of the galleried type was the 'White Hart,' which may have been identical with Fastolf's 'Harte House'. The George Inn in Southwark High Street is the only remaining example of a galleried inn important as the prototype of the Elizabethan theatre. Southwark, also known as the 'White Lion', 'Sign of the Chequers,' and 'Baxter's Coffee House,' was a popular leisure ground for London citizens from the 16th century until the Civil War. It was a place of privilege and exclusion from regulations that bound the City. After the Restoration, the town became a stronghold of faction and dissent. In 1664, a bridge from Westminster to Lambeth was urged to provide soldiers better access to Southwark, 'the nest of fanatics.' Most sectaries about London were said to be lodged in the borough.
