Lemonwell Drive is named after the 'Lemon Well', a bricked well near Avery Hill that was once known for its medicinal properties. John Thomas North, born in Leeds in 1842, was a machine manufacturer and discovered vast deposits of nitrate of soda in South America, making him wealthy. He built an extravagant house at Avery Hill and became Honorary Colonel of the Tower Hamlets Volunteer Engineers.
